Why Soundproof Walls Fail Without Acoustic Caulking
You can spend thousands on double stud walls, acoustic insulation and resilient mounts — and lose the result to a 2 mm gap at the skirting. Sound travels through air, so an acoustic wall performs only if it's airtight. Acoustic caulking is the cheapest component of a soundproof wall and the one that decides whether the rest of it worked.
How does sound leak through a wall?
Airborne sound finds every gap: the junction where the wall meets the floor and ceiling, the perimeter where it meets other walls, penetrations for power points, switches and pipes, and the deflection gap at the head of the wall. Acousticians call these flanking paths. A small open path leaks a disproportionate amount of sound — which is why a well-built wall with unsealed junctions tests far below its design performance.
Where must acoustic sealant go?
- Wall perimeter — the full junction with floor, ceiling and abutting walls, both sides where specified.
- Head of wall — the movement gap at the slab soffit, sealed with a flexible bead that survives deflection.
- Penetrations — around electrical boxes, pipes, ducts and cable entries.
- Between plasterboard layers where the system calls for staggered, sealed joints.
Why does the sealant have to be an acoustic one?
Because buildings move. An acoustic sealant is dense and stays permanently flexible, so the seal survives thermal movement, deflection and vibration. A rigid gap filler cracks as the building works, and a hairline crack is an air path — the leak comes back invisibly. This is the same failure we're called to fix in apartments where the noise complaints started a year after handover.
When does acoustic caulking matter most?
Apartment party walls and inter-tenancy floors, hotel rooms, meeting rooms and consulting suites in office fit-outs, home theatres and studios — anywhere a wall was specified for sound separation. If the wall was worth building acoustically, its junctions are worth sealing properly.
